I took off my handlebar bag 2 days ago, and I'm not going back.
It was starting to fall apart and I've been looking for a replacement, but I took it off so that I wouldn't have one more thing to worry about when I locked up my bike at work.
The first thing I noticed was that shifting became a lot smoother. I suppose the bag was pressing against the cables or something.
Next, steering is more stable; I don't wobble as much on the slow uphills. The bag was heavy.
So like I said, I was going to replace it, but now I prefer no bag on the handlebars at all. The problem is, it was so damn convenient. I kept snacks, my glasses, phone, tissues, maps in there. Those are things I regularly got out of the bag without getting off the bike. Where am I going to keep those things now?
One idea: put stuff in a spare bottle in my second bottle cage. It's not as convenient but at least I can get to it without dismounting, and as a bonus it's waterproof.

are you telling me you don't have a pack under your seat? you probably do and it has a spare tube in it with tools for changing the tire right? And you have a pump mounted on your bike too right?
you really need to wear a jersey; the pockets on the backs are great to put cell phone, money, keys, whatever and nothing will fall out; you might want to put the money in a clip or something. Also you need the elastic on the bottom so it's not flapping in the wind.
Why would I need a seat bag; I had a handlebar bag. And where am I going to keep my map, the one that keeps me from getting lost on new rides?
I don't want to buy a special just-for-biking jersey just because I need a place to keep my map and glasses. Oh, well.
