Very cool. Those hills are nothing to sneeze at in Marin. As far as distance goes I don't have a odometer myself but may get one in a couple weeks.
I think I'll start by measuring time/heart rate. I believe the first step is to find my max heart rate and then try to bike at a certain range. I believe 60-70% is good to start. Of course doing intervals might be good as well for building strength and losing some initial pounds. Need to do some research.
